Legaspi or Legazpi is situated in Albay, Region 5, Philippines; its geographical coordinates are 13° 8' 14" North, 123° 44' 4" East and its original name is Legaspi, popularly spelled with a z nowadays. The road or train trip will take 10-12 hours for the 534 Km from Manila but the flight is just 45 minutes. Flights are 7x daily to/from Manila and several times weekly to/from Cebu.
Legazpi first became a town in 1856, when the districts of Albay Veijo and Albay Nueva were renamed after its former district head, El Adelantado Miguel Lopez de Legazpi (1502-1572), and this became a city in 1892. The city is the political and administrative center of the Bicol region and also the largest city in the region in terms of population with 182,201 inhabitants (2010 census). It is a main regional centre for education with many young students who attend the two universities, many colleges, medical schools and training institutions.
The most famous landmark is the very active Mayon Volcano, which had its perfect cone damaged by an eruption about 10 years ago and this is what you watch out for during the approach by air.
If you are lucky and get a perfectly clear day, the photos will grace a wall poster...and the trip up the slopes to see the 2006 lava flow is a must.
