mt. mayon
The most famous landmark of the Bicol Region is the very active Mayon Volcano and, with its perfect cone and ever-present plumes, this is what you watch out for during the approach by air. If you are lucky and get a perfectly clear day, the photos will grace a wall poster...and the trip up the slopes to see the 2006 lava wall is a must.
Mt. Mayon is touted as one of the most beautiful volcanoes in the world. See http://www.bbc.com/travel/story/20150520-the-worlds-most-beautiful-volcanos for recent BBC article about this awe inspiring stratovolcano. Climbing Mt. cagsawa ruins
Cagsawa Ruins are the remnants of an 18-century Franciscan Church which was destroyed by an eruption of Mt. Mayon in 1814. The 1814 eruption, still considered the worst eruption to date, buried Cagsawa town under tons of pyroclastic materials and killed an estimated 1,200 people. It is now one of the most visited places in the region and was recognised by The International Tourism Bourse based in Berlin, Germany as one of the must-see places in Asia. For the visitors, the ruins stand today as a symbolic reminder of how nature's beauty and fury intertwine.
Cagsawa Ruins is part of the protected Mayon Volcano Natural Park and is overseen by the local government of Daraga and by the National Museum of the Philippines. The museum, also known as Cagsawa National Museum, houses a collection of photographs of the volcanic eruptions of Mount Mayon as well as various geological and archeological exhibits.
